Custom Requests
Baltimore Custom Woodworking & Metalworking Projects
Not every project fits a standard category, and that’s exactly where we do some of our most interesting work. At Soul Crafted Studio, our custom request services cover the builds that fall outside of custom furniture and custom cabinetry. Projects like interior and exterior railings, custom doors, wall-mounted shelving, floating shelves, commercial signage, retail displays, and institutional exhibit builds. Because we handle both woodworking and metal fabrication in-house, we’re not limited to a single material or a single approach. If you can describe what you’re trying to build, we can figure out how to build it. Fill out a contact form to start the conversation, and we’ll follow up to discuss your project.

Our Custom Projects/Requests Process
Custom requests follow the same design/build process as our other services; the main difference is that we spend a little more time upfront to ensure we understand exactly what you’re trying to create.

Initial Consultation
Start by filling out a contact form or reaching out directly to describe your project. You don’t need a finished design or a technical spec, but a general description of what you’re building, where it’s going, and what you’re hoping it accomplishes is enough to get the conversation started. From there, we’ll set up a consultation to dig into the details.

Design & Specifications
Once we understand the scope, we take measurements, assess the site or space, and develop a design and digital drawing for your review. This is where we work through material selection, finish options, and any structural or functional requirements specific to your project. Nothing moves into fabrication until you’ve reviewed the design and given your approval.

Crafting Your Custom Piece
With an approved design confirmed, your project enters our Baltimore workshop. We source materials, prepare every component to spec, and build the piece by hand — whether that means cutting and joining hardwood, welding steel elements, or combining both. We share updates at key points during the build so you’re never left guessing about where things stand.

Finishing & Installation
Before we schedule delivery or installation, every finished piece is reviewed against the approved design specs, dimensions, finish, and any structural details. For projects requiring on-site installation, like railings, built-in shelving, or exhibit structures, our team handles that directly.

What Kinds of Custom Projects Do We Take On?
Custom woodworking and metalworking can address design challenges that mass-produced options simply aren’t built to solve, such as unusual dimensions, specific materials, and architectural details that need to match an existing space. Here’s a look at the types of custom requests we handle regularly.
- Railings – We design and fabricate custom railings for both residential and commercial applications, including interior stair railings, exterior porch railings, balcony rails, and decorative dividers. Material options include steel, iron, solid wood, or a combination of wood and metal, depending on the space’s aesthetic and structural requirements.
- Doors – Whether it’s a solid wood interior door, a steel-framed entry door, or a barn-style sliding door for a commercial space, the design process works the same way – we take measurements, establish the style and material direction, and develop a drawing for your review before fabrication begins. Custom doors are particularly common in renovation projects where standard sizing doesn’t match existing openings, or where the goal is to create a statement piece that sets the tone for the space.
- Shelving & Floating Shelves – Wall-mounted and floating shelves are among the custom builds we’ve completed for both residential and commercial clients. Custom shelving built from solid hardwood and real materials holds up to daily use in a way that prefabricated options rarely do, and it can be sized, finished, and mounted to work with a specific wall, a specific load requirement, or a specific design scheme.
- Signs, Displays & Exhibits – This is one of the broader categories we work in, and it covers a wide range of project types. We’ve built wood and metal wall art installations for commercial offices, retail display cases for product-forward businesses, and purpose-built exhibit structures for institutional clients. If your project involves communicating something visually, such as a brand, a collection, or an idea, and you need a physical structure to do it, we can help design and build it.

Custom Woodworking & Metalworking Projects FAQ
What’s the difference between a custom request and your other services?
Our custom tables, furniture, and cabinetry pages cover the builds we handle most often. The custom requests service is for the projects that don’t fit a standard product category but fall within our woodworking and metalworking capabilities. Railings, doors, shelving, signs, displays, exhibits, and similar builds all live here.
Do you take on small projects, or only large builds?
We take on projects of all sizes! Some of our custom request builds are compact but detail-intensive; others are large-scale commercial or institutional projects. Scope doesn’t determine fit; what you’re trying to accomplish does.
Can you work from a design I already have, or do you develop the design?
Either will work! If you have an existing design, technical drawing, or detailed reference, we can work from it directly and focus the consultation on build specs and material selection. If you’re starting from scratch, we’ll help develop the design collaboratively by gathering your goals, taking measurements, and building out a drawing for your review.
Do you handle both the woodworking and metalworking in-house?
Yes, both disciplines are handled by our team in our Baltimore workshop. We don’t outsource fabrication to other vendors, which means the design intent carries through to the finished product without getting lost in handoffs. For projects that combine wood and metal elements, having both capabilities under one roof also simplifies coordination and keeps the build timeline cleaner.
Do you work with institutions and commercial clients on one-off builds?
Yes, and it’s a meaningful part of what we do. We’ve worked with universities, corporate offices, retail businesses, and other commercial clients on custom builds that don’t fit standard product categories, including display structures, wall installations, branded fixtures, and similar projects. If your organization needs something purpose-built and you want a local fabrication partner who can handle the full design/build process, we’re set up to work in that capacity.
Do you work with clients outside of Baltimore?
Yes. While our workshop is in Baltimore, we take on custom projects for clients across the U.S. when the scope is a good fit for our capabilities. For out-of-area projects, we handle design consultations remotely, coordinate any necessary site visits for measurement-dependent builds, and work out delivery or installation logistics on a project-by-project basis. Contact us with your project details, and we’ll let you know what’s feasible.
Every Project Starts With a Conversation
The builds on this page don’t always come with a clear category name or a finished design brief, and that’s fine. Some of the most straightforward projects we’ve taken on started as a rough idea, a photo reference, or just a description of a problem that needed solving. What they all had in common was a client who knew what they wanted the finished piece to accomplish, even if they weren’t sure yet how to get there.
That’s the kind of conversation we’re built for. We’re a Baltimore woodworking and metalworking studio with the range to take on projects that don’t fit a mold, and the process to make sure the end result reflects what you had in mind from the start. If you have a project you’d like to discuss, fill out a contact form today and we’ll follow up to get the details.
