How Does the Custom Furniture Design Process Work?
Our goal is to make the design and build process as seamless as possible for our clients. The process typically involves the following 4 steps:

Consultation & Measuring
Every project starts with getting to know what you’re trying to build and why. We’ll talk through how the piece will be used, what the space looks like, and what aesthetic you’re going for. We’ll also take initial measurements at this stage; getting those details early means the design we develop is grounded in reality, not adjusted after the fact.

Design & Material Selection
With your goals and measurements in hand, we develop a digital drawing that brings the concept to life before any fabrication begins. Alongside the drawing, we work through material selection together, which entails choosing a wood species and finish for the piece itself and determining the right base or structural elements if metal is involved. You review and approve everything before we move forward.

Crafting Your Custom Piece
With an approved design in hand, we get to work in our Baltimore workshop. We hand-select materials, mill components to spec, and build your piece from the ground up. We share progress updates throughout the build so you’re never left in the dark.

Finishing & Installation
Before we schedule delivery, we do a thorough review of the finished piece against your approved specs, dimensions, finish, and any metal details. From there, we coordinate a delivery time that works for you and handle placement in the space. If anything isn’t right, we make it right before we leave.

Frequently Asked Questions About Custom Furniture
What types of custom furniture does Soul Crafted Studio build?
We build a broad range of custom wood and metal furniture, benches, shelving, desks, bed frames, storage pieces, display cases, commercial built-ins, and more. If you have something specific in mind that isn’t listed, reach out anyway. Some of our favorite projects have started with “I have this idea, but I’m not sure if it’s possible.”
What wood species do you work with?
We work with a range of domestic hardwoods including walnut, maple, cherry, ash, and elm. During your consultation, we’ll walk through options that suit the look you’re going for, the intended use of the piece, and the environment it’ll live in. We’ll also bring material samples so you can see and feel the options before committing.
Can I bring my own design or inspiration to the consultation?
Absolutely, and we encourage it. Bring any photos, sketches, dimensions, Pinterest boards, and anything else that helps communicate your vision. The more context we have going in, the more useful the first conversation will be. We’ll take your inspiration and translate it into build specs and a digital drawing that reflects what you’re actually picturing.
Do you work with interior designers and commercial clients?
Yes, and we do it regularly. We work with interior designers as a design/build partner on client projects, handling both the woodworking and metal fabrication in-house. For commercial clients, this includes restaurants, offices, retail spaces, and many other businesses that are looking for custom furniture or woodworking/metalworking needs.
How much does custom furniture cost?
Every project is different, so we don’t publish set pricing. Cost depends on factors like size, wood species, finish, complexity of the design, and whether metal fabrication is involved. What we can tell you is that pricing is transparent from the start. You’ll receive a detailed quote after your consultation, before anything moves forward.
Do you work with clients outside of Baltimore?
Yes. While we’re based in Baltimore, we work with clients across the U.S. As long as your project aligns with our capabilities, distance isn’t a barrier. Many out-of-area clients connect with us virtually for the consultation and design stages, and we coordinate shipping or delivery once the build is complete.
What’s the difference between custom furniture and finish carpentry?
Custom furniture refers to standalone pieces, such as tables, benches, desks, shelving units, and similar items that are built to your specifications and delivered as finished products. Finish carpentry typically refers to built-in work that’s installed directly into a space, like trim, molding, and cabinetry. We handle both, and many projects involve a combination of the two. If you’re not sure which category your project falls into, just describe what you’re envisioning and we’ll sort it out together.
Build in Baltimore. Built to Last
There’s a difference between furniture that’s assembled and furniture that’s built. At Soul Crafted Studio, every piece that leaves our workshop was designed around a specific person, a specific space, and a specific vision. We’re not pulling from a catalog or adapting a template, we’re starting from scratch every time, with materials we’ve hand-selected and a process we’ve refined through years of hands-on work. That’s what it means to work with a craft studio rather than a furniture retailer.
Our workshop is in Baltimore, and so are we. When you work with us, you’re working directly with the people cutting, shaping, and finishing your piece. That kind of direct involvement shows up in the details: the way a joint is fitted, the way a finish is applied, the way we follow up after delivery to make sure everything is right. We take pride in building things that outlast trends and hold up to real daily use.
Let’s Build Something Worth Keeping
Custom furniture gives you full control over how a piece looks, how it fits, and how long it lasts. At Soul Crafted Studio, we bring the design and fabrication expertise to make that process straightforward, from the first conversation through delivery. If you’re ready to get started, fill out a contact form today, and we’ll follow up to schedule a consultation. Have questions first? We’re happy to talk through your project before you commit to anything.
